Unsung Beauty
One of the other winners among the Saturn crowd were the pants created by Terri Stevens. This girl can whip up a pair in no time and these were very well done. There was serious discussion amongst the Saturn hoi polloi about how these could be marketed. The guys thought they could be made into motorcycle pants. The finish was amazing given the time constraints and I loved the detail at the top.
The contrast between the front and back of the pant was really cool.
Unfortunately, I failed to get a picture of her top, but this look could have easily been chosen for the Top 3. There was another design that I thought was of little interest while watching the show, but in person ended up being surprisingly chic and beautiful.Click here to see!

More From The Saturn Closet
Click on the photo for a closer view.
You want to know something shocking? Saturn is populated with a bunch of geeky gearheads, some of whom have never watched Project Runway. I know, this is hard to fathom. But one thing is certain, even if you don't know Suede from Stella, when you walk by Korto Momulu's amazing seatbelt coat you absolutely stop dead in your tracks.
Lisa Gilpin and I lugged this coat out of the file room closet and everyone within eyeshot began oohing and aahing. To answer a reader question, the coat was unlined. Given the time restraint of the challenge, I wasn't surprised.
Like Rachel Zoe, many proclaimed that they could easily wear it out the door. That's until you actually try to lift this thing. It weighs 30 pounds! Honestly, I don't know how Korto's model Katrina managed to walk this down the runway without falling over face first.
See this look on her face:
That's not the face of high fashion. That's a face in pain!
Click here for more as Tbone heads back into the closet to check out Stella and Suede's designs.

Tbone's Big Adventure
So there I was toiling away in the BPR workroom (aka lounging about at home in my pajamas) when the batphone rings. "Hey Tbone, this is Lisa Gilpin from Saturn. You will not believe what I have here in front of me." Hmmmm. "This better be good Gilpin, I'm really, really busy", I say rolling off my couch.
"I have all 10 designs from this week's challenge!" GET OUT! "Wanna come down and see them?" GET OUT!!!
Now, living in Detroit rarely offers any advantage when it comes to being a Project Runway fan. How long I have envied everyone who is a mere subway ride away from designer appearances, EMC2, the Atlas, Mood, Parsons and the Times Square Red Lobster. No way I was going to pass this chance up.
"Don't move Gilpin, I'm on my way." I couldn't wait to see what turned out to be the strongest collective design work all season in person. As I drove downtown, questions began racing through my head - How much did Korto's coat weigh? How in the world did Suede assemble that top? How did Kenley attach that little filter skirt? And maybe most importantly:
Can I get past security at GM World Headquarters in my jammies?

Reality Worlds Collide
The Minx and I ran into Shear Genius Season Two Stylists Glenn Mitchell and Gail Soifer at Emmett McCarthy's boutique on Thursday. They graciously posed for photos in Emmett's designs. These girls are gorgeous aren't they?
Of course we each bought a pair of shoes... read more here.
We also enjoyed a delicious meal at Harold Dieterle's Perilla restaurant. The Top Chef winner was a little shy, but the food was delicious. Malan Breton and Amanda Fields joined us for an early dinner on Wednesday. Red more about our meal here.
Reality Worlds also Colliding in Houston... Robert Reid, interior designer competing on season two of Top Design is working on Chloe Dao's home. Click here for the story. Top Design premieres next Wednesday night at 10:00 - after Project Runway. I've watched the first episode of the new series and I found the designers and the new host, India Hicks, to be very compelling.

The Recap of the Manolo
The Manolo has a favorite:
Korto is clearly the most original and unexpected of all of the designers. Her choices are not always those of the Manolo, but they are emphatically her own, and they are emphatically original. She deserves to be in the final three, although whether or not the judges see it that way is the different matter.

Congratulations, Leanne
This challenge was about innovation and thought. The cocktail dress you created was sculptural and your play with proportion was inspired. Using the lines and shapes of the seat covers was a risk but by using artful construction, you created a beautiful waistline rather than the appearance of a bulky hip. You saw that others were using seatbelts so you avoided using them as a strap and you fashioned a perfectly placed fringed embellishment that softened the hard edge of the vinyl. But your greatest achievement may have been that you nearly rendered Rachel Zoe speechless - she was "blown away" and told you that you could "go straight to Paris with this" and that it was flawless. Bellissima, Leanne!

BPR Love for Keith Bryce
You took the judges' comments to heart this week and veered outside your aesthetic. Instead of deconstructing, you aimed for a sleeker, more body-conscious silhouette. You should be applauded for the attempt and results looked very ready-to-wear. Your win in the 'Welcome to the Jungle' episode revealed how well you collaborate with another designer and your skill in selling a look to a celebrity client. That dress was a stunning achievement and is set to appear on network television worn by a fashion icon. This was an excellent showing, Keith, and you should be very proud of your efforts.

Extra BPR Love for Wesley Nault
A Note From Daniel Feld -
...I wanted to take the time and thank you for the kind words you posted in your blog about me once I was eliminated. It is really nice see a blog that consistently remains positive....
I also regret to inform you that Wesley's grandfather passed away this past weekend. He was extremely close and this has been an emotional time for him. I would like to know if it would be at all possible to create a spot on your blog for him where his fans could ... write a few kind words to his loss. This would mean the world to him and I know he would be so grateful if you could help. The funeral is this Wednesday and I just wanted to support him in any way I could. I love him so much!!!
Please leave your words of support and encouragement to Wesley Nault in this sad time.

Uncle Nick's Recap
This certainly isn't the first time at the drag queen rodeo for Nick Verreos:
Now, of course, as a gay man who has been "in the scene" and a follower/fan of the fabulous world of Drag Queens, I was familiar with these ladies. But all I kept thinking was what were the reactions of all those Midwest Project Runway viewers (and their 15 year old daughters), when these Drag Queens--and their play-on-words names--were shown to America? For a whole lot of them, this was probably their first lesson in Drag 101. Good for Bravo and Project Runway I say!

Congratulations, Joe
This week was all about big as evidenced first by that silhouette behind the 'Project Runway' scrim. BIG(!) personalities, BIG(!) statements and BIG(!) 'girls' all figured into the mix. Listening to your client seems like a little thing when you're dealing with jumbo feathers and mega-sequins and enormous falsies. You took a huge risk by giving your queen a catsuit but you listened to her concerns about looking too Elvis in a jumpsuit. By transforming your girl's neckline to a sailor collar you took the look instead to Presley's 'Viva Las Vegas' co-star channeling Ann-Margaret sex kitten all the way. The sly addition of the little nautical hat emphasized the larger-than-life persona of Varla Jean Merman while the lifesaver belt concealed her 'accessories.' Ahoy! This was over-the-top fun and Miss Merman obviously adored how she looked on the catwalk. Well done, Joe!

BPR Love for Daniel Feld
You emerged early on as a BPR favorite and our readers saw you as being in the final three with your high-end and elegant aesthetic. Clearly we saw your point-of-view as you crafted flattering, exquisite cocktail and evening looks each week. You could tell on the runway that everyone, including your gal this week, enjoyed wearing your garments; Annida looked glamorous and feminine and oh how she knew it! The gown you created in this outing was wearable, impeccably executed, well-fit and pretty - it just wasn't drag. One usually aspires on Project Runway to avoid over-the-top and so you tripped by instead aiming toward beautiful. Not a bad way to go out. Daniel, you will be missed!

Rami Kashou Update
Hi BPR,
I hope all is very well.. I just got back from Puerto Rico where I was fortunate to show at a breathtaking Saint Regis resort called Bahia Beach. I presented a variety of my looks on the runway, 26 total, and then followed with a very successful trunk show. All the city's socialites were there 200 people total. I also did a great deal of press.

Amanda's Take - Episode Five
From Miss Fields to Miss Shields
The first team challenge of Season 5 means that they are only using half of the models this episode. It's always interesting to see who they choose! You know the designers wanted a model who could exemplify what Lipstick Jungle and Brooke Shields are all about. It needs to be said that sometimes there are pairs who have two great models and they have to just pick one, and there might have been teams who had two just okay models and had to choose one who was just slightly better than the other. Every time there was a team challenge in my season I was picked as the model! :)
I have only seen the pilot for "Lipstick Jungle" and I was not a fan of the show. However, I might watch to see the outfit, which will be more entertaining than some of the actors! I do love Brooke Shields though.
Shannone, Nicole and Polina represented their designers well on the runway and seemed to be having fun wearing their garments for Miss Shields!

Congratulations, Keith
You were the first designer selected by Brooke Shields who enjoyed the layers and the proportions. The dress you created was exactly like your drawing but looked even more lighter-than-air on the runway composed of floating chiffon petals and a bold printed, convertible blouse. You collaborated well with Kenley - her clean lines joined with your raw aesthetic could have had a jarring result but looked, according to Brooke "inspired ... rich and expensive." In the end you seem to have brought out the best in each other and now you will have a photo in your portfolio of model/actress/fashion icon Brooke Shields wearing your ensemble on television. Well done, Keith!

BPR Love for Kelli Martin
You were selected to be a team leader by Brooke Shields because she liked the potential of your concept; she enjoyed the potential play on words of 'Lipstick Jungle' and her character wearing a hint of leopard. You took the judge's advice and toned down the amount of animal print and tried to remain true to your vision, the one that Brooke chose. Your execution was always impeccable, most notably in the first challenge in which you won and wowed the audience, Michael Kors and even Nina Garcia. Your designs had ingenuity, complexity and a definite edgier point-of-view. We admired how you defended your position on the runway - you indeed had never found yourself before in the bottom pack - and how you agonized over not selecting your friend, Stella, as your teammate in this episode. You were always fun to watch and you sure wore great hats in addition to creating outstanding designs. We wish you the best with your own line and know this is yet another stop for you on the road to brand recognition.
This post is only for positive words for Kelli Martin or her designs. If you have something to say about another designer or this challenge, please post it in our 'Reactions' post here.
